More than an admin panel: what Filament delivers today
Filament goes far beyond classic data management: public forms without login, custom grids and heat maps, multi-step forms and complete internal applications. We use exactly these capabilities in client projects, and we are just as clear about where the limits are.
Public tables and forms without login
Filament tables and forms can be installed individually and used on publicly accessible pages: appointment booking, application forms, product overviews or standings tables with filters and pagination. Same look, same logic as in the backend, without duplicate development for the public area.
Complex forms that actually get completed
Invoices with line items, master data with 50 to 100 fields or multi-step application processes: with repeaters, sections, tabs and wizards including a summary step, we structure large forms so that users finish them. Everything is defined declaratively, without custom JavaScript.
Custom pages and widgets
Under the hood, every Filament page is a Livewire component. Attendance grids, availability overviews for staff, vehicles or rooms and activity heat maps are built as custom pages or as widgets that can be embedded in any dashboard, in the familiar Filament design.
Tables as card grids
A Filament table does not have to look like a table. Records can be displayed as a responsive card grid, with the same filters, actions and pagination working behind the scenes. Ideal for product catalogs, team overviews or project boards that need visual appeal.
Corporate design with a sense of proportion
Around 100 render hooks make it possible to insert your logo, user avatar, search or notices at defined positions and adapt the panel to your brand. A fully custom theme is technically possible, but it means a large CSS layer that has to be maintained permanently. We only recommend it when the benefit justifies the effort.
Internal applications as a growth area
More and more companies are replacing spreadsheets and isolated tools with their own internal applications: CRM, planning and approval tools, reporting. Filament delivers these applications with a backend team and without a separate JavaScript frontend, in weeks rather than months.

Can Filament be integrated into existing systems?
Yes, in three ways. Filament is a Composer package, not a standalone system. It fits into your Laravel application instead of standing next to it.
Path 1: Into an existing Laravel application
- Installed via Composer into the existing project, with its own panel under a path such as /admin
- Existing models, migrations, policies and user accounts are reused directly
- No data reconciliation, no second database, no parallel application
Path 2: As an interface for external systems
- ERP, CRM, shop system or legacy database are connected through REST or GraphQL APIs, queues or a direct database connection
- Filament becomes the central interface across several sources
- Write access runs through defined interfaces, with background synchronization via jobs
Path 3: Login and permissions from your landscape
- Single sign-on via Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace or SAML and OpenID Connect providers
- Existing role models are mapped to Filament permissions
What we check up front
- Version status: Laravel and PHP version of the existing application, with an upgrade before integration where needed
- Data ownership: Which system owns which master data, so that no conflicting states arise
- Interface contracts: Documented APIs or reverse engineering of legacy systems
The bottom line: Integration is routine work once the questions of data ownership and interfaces are settled early. Our experience in API development and web application development feeds directly into it.
How do roles, permissions and multi-tenancy work in Filament?
Filament relies on the authorization system of Laravel and extends it with multi-tenancy. Roles in the narrower sense come from a package, while the rules stay in your code.
Authorization: policies
- For every data model, a policy defines who may view, create, edit or delete records
- Filament evaluates these policies automatically: buttons, menu items and actions only appear when the user is authorized
- Access to each panel is controlled individually, for example only for employees with a specific email domain or a confirmed role
Roles and rights: proven packages
- spatie/laravel-permission: The de facto standard for roles and permissions in Laravel
- Filament Shield: Generates permissions for all resources, pages and widgets automatically and provides an interface in which you manage roles yourself
- Field-level: Individual fields or columns can be hidden or set to read-only depending on the role
Multi-tenancy
- Built in: Filament supports tenants, such as teams, branches or customer companies, with its own tenant switcher in the panel
- Data separation: All queries are automatically restricted to the active tenant, and we secure this additionally at the database level
- Roles per tenant: A user can be an administrator in one tenant and read-only in another
What we document
- A permission concept in table form: role, resource, allowed actions
- Test cases that prevent a later feature from opening a gap
The bottom line: You get a permission model that business departments can maintain themselves without developer involvement. Where needed, we review security-relevant details as part of our consulting.
How does Filament handle large datasets and many concurrent users?
Filament renders server-side via Livewire. Set up correctly, tables with millions of rows and applications with hundreds of concurrent users stay responsive. Set up incorrectly, every table becomes a bottleneck.
Large datasets
- Server-side pagination: Only the visible rows are loaded. The database sorts and filters, not the browser
- Indexes and queries: Every filter and sort column gets matching indexes, and relations are loaded via eager loading instead of individual queries
- Deferred loading: Tables and widgets can load after the page has rendered so the interface responds immediately
- Exports and imports via queues: Large CSV or Excel files are processed in the background, with progress indicator and notification
- Precomputed aggregations: Dashboard KPIs are calculated by jobs, not on every page load
Many concurrent users
- Standard Laravel scaling: Caching, queue workers, database replication, horizontal scaling across several application servers
- Laravel Octane: Significantly higher throughput per server where needed
- Measurement instead of gut feeling: We profile real usage patterns and optimize the parts that actually slow things down
Where the limit is
Livewire exchanges data with the server on interactions. For interfaces with a very high interaction frequency, such as real-time editors or trading views, we add targeted Alpine.js logic in the browser or use a dedicated frontend for that part.
The bottom line: For business applications, portals and management interfaces, performance with Filament is a matter of implementation, not of the framework. We bring existing applications up to speed as part of our performance optimization.
How does mindtwo ensure the security of Filament applications?
Filament inherits the security mechanisms of Laravel, but security comes from configuration and discipline. Filament controls access rights through Laravel policies. We add roles and permissions with proven packages.
What Laravel and Filament bring
- Baseline protection: CSRF protection, automatic escaping in Blade, prepared statements through Eloquent
- Authentication: Password hashing, rate limiting, optional two-factor authentication
- Authorization: Policies per model and action, access to each panel controlled individually
What we add
- Roles and permissions: Filament Shield or spatie/laravel-permission, down to the visibility of individual fields
- Tenant separation: Scopes at the database level, not just in the interface
- Uploads: Validation, private storage locations, signed URLs, virus scanning where needed
- Audit log: Who changed which record and when
- Dependencies: composer audit in CI and prompt installation of security releases
Review and operations
- Code reviews, static analysis and security tests before every release
- Penetration tests by external reviewers on request
- Monitoring and maintenance contracts for ongoing operations
The bottom line: A Filament application is as secure as its configuration. We deliver it with a documented permission concept and review existing applications as part of our consulting. Our maintenance packages keep it secure in operation.
How far can Filament be adapted to our corporate design?
Further than the uniform look of many Filament applications suggests. The question is less what is technically possible and more what can be maintained economically in the long run.
Level 1: Configuration (standard in every project)
- Primary color and color palette, logo, favicon, typeface
- Light and dark mode, navigation, grouping and icons
- Custom start page, dashboards and widgets
Level 2: Targeted interventions (worthwhile in most projects)
- Render hooks: Around 100 defined positions in the layout where your own content can be inserted, such as a user avatar in the sidebar, notices above tables or a relocated search
- Custom theme: A Tailwind theme with your design tokens for spacing, radii and colors
- Custom pages and Blade views: Where the standard layout does not fit, we build pages freely, using Filament components for a consistent look
Level 3: Fully custom design (only with good reason)
- Technically possible: every Filament class can be overridden via CSS
- The price: a large stylesheet layer that has to be checked and adjusted with every update
- Our recommendation: only when the panel itself is part of the brand experience. For internal tools it rarely pays off
The bottom line: With levels 1 and 2, your application looks like your company and remains inexpensive to maintain. If level 3 is necessary, we include the maintenance effort openly in the calculation. We work out design questions together with our UX/UI design team.
How long does it take to develop a Filament application and what drives the effort?
Filament drastically shortens the time needed for standard functionality. The effort concentrates on your business logic, your integrations and your data quality.
Experience values
- First management interface: Tables, forms and permissions for existing data models are ready within a few days
- Internal tool: An application with several resources, a dashboard, roles and one integration takes around 4 to 8 weeks
- Business application or customer portal: Several modules, multi-tenancy, workflows, reporting and external interfaces typically require 3 to 6 months
What drives the effort
- Business logic: Approval processes, calculations, status models. This is where the real value and the real effort lie
- Integrations: Every external interface brings coordination, error handling and testing with it
- Data migration: Cleaning and transferring legacy data is regularly underestimated
- Permissions and tenants: Fine-grained permissions and tenant separation need a clean concept before implementation
- Design: Configuration and targeted adjustments are quick, a fully custom design is a work package of its own
Our approach
- Concept workshop covering requirements, data model and permission concept
- Sprints with runnable interim versions that your business departments test early
- Prioritization by value: first whatever replaces spreadsheets and manual work
The bottom line: The timeframes mentioned are based on experience, and we translate them to your project in the initial consultation. A reliable estimate comes from the concept workshop at the start.
How much effort do major Filament upgrades take?
Filament publishes new major versions at regular intervals with documented breaking changes. The effort depends almost entirely on how the application was built.
What Filament provides
- Upgrade script: An official tool adjusts namespaces, method names and signatures automatically and handles most of the mechanical work
- Upgrade guide: Every change is documented, including rationale and migration path
- Overlapping support: The previous major version continues to receive security updates, so an upgrade does not have to happen on release day
What drives the effort
- Custom components: Individual fields, columns and pages need to be reviewed. If Filament was extended rather than its core classes overridden, there is little to do here
- Plugins: Third-party plugins need a compatible version. We prefer established plugins with active maintenance
- Tests: Good test coverage turns an upgrade into an afternoon with a green pipeline. Without tests, it becomes a manual click-through
Our approach
- Construction: We stick to the public APIs of Filament and document every deliberate deviation
- Planning: Upgrades of Laravel, Filament and PHP are bundled into fixed maintenance windows, usually once a year
- Safeguards: Automated tests, staging environment and acceptance before rollout
The bottom line: For cleanly built applications, a major upgrade is a predictable item of a few days. We handle it as part of our maintenance packages, including for applications we did not build.
Is Filament suitable for customer portals and public pages, or only for internal admin panels?
Filament is no longer limited to the protected area. Customer portals, partner areas and public forms are among its typical use cases today.
Customer portals and partner areas
- Dedicated panel: An application can have several panels, for example an admin panel for your team and a portal for customers with its own login, design and feature set
- Multi-tenancy: Every customer sees only their own data, technically secured at the database level
- Typical cases: Order overviews, ticket systems, document exchange, self-service for master data
Public pages without login
- Forms: Appointment booking, job applications, inquiries or registrations with validation, file upload and multi-step flows, without login
- Tables: Product overviews, event listings or standings tables with filters, search and pagination on publicly accessible pages
- One look: The same components as in the backend, so no duplicate development
Where Filament is not the first choice
- Marketing websites: For editorial content and SEO-driven pages, a CMS such as Statamic or Craft CMS is the better fit
- Highly individual frontends: If every pixel has to follow the brand, for example in consumer apps, a custom frontend with Vue.js or React delivers the better result
The bottom line: For applications in which users enter, manage and analyze data, Filament works well for external users too. For brand experiences, the classic frontend remains the better choice. We work out the right mix with you as part of our web application development.
What advantages does Filament offer compared to other admin panel solutions?
In practice, the alternatives are Laravel Nova, a self-built admin frontend or a low-code tool. Filament wins on license costs, development speed and feature scope, without tying you to a vendor.
Filament versus Laravel Nova
- License: Filament is open source under the MIT license and free. Nova is a commercial product licensed per project
- Technology: Filament builds on Livewire and is customized in PHP and Blade. Nova is based on Vue.js, and custom fields require your own Vue components
- Scope: Multi-step wizards, repeaters, multiple panels, multi-tenancy and tables or forms outside the panel are part of the Filament core
- When Nova stays: Existing Nova installations and teams with a Vue focus. We run both and do not recommend switching for the sake of switching
Filament versus a custom build with Vue or React
- Custom build: Full design freedom, but every table, filter and form is built and maintained individually
- Filament: Standard functionality is ready, development time goes into your business logic
Filament versus low-code tools
- Low-code: Quick start, but license costs per user, limits with complex business logic and your data at the vendor
- Filament: Your own code, your own infrastructure, no per-user licenses, unlimited extensibility
The bottom line: For new Laravel projects, Filament is our standard recommendation today. Where Nova is already in use, we support you just as well, see our page on Laravel Nova.
What is Filament, and why is it useful for my business?
Filament is an open source framework built on Laravel and Livewire that lets you assemble admin panels, internal business applications and customer portals from ready-made, customizable building blocks. Filament sees itself as a tool for applications and admin panels, not just for data management behind the scenes.
What Filament brings
- Resources: Tables, forms, filters, search and bulk actions for your data models, defined declaratively in PHP
- Dashboards and widgets: KPIs, charts and tables that give decision makers an overview
- Form building blocks: Repeaters for line items, tabs and sections for large forms, multi-step wizards, file uploads and rich text
- Permissions and structure: Authorization through Laravel policies, multiple panels in one application, multi-tenancy
- Public pages: Tables and forms can also be used outside the panel on publicly accessible pages
Why this matters for your business
- Speed: Standard functionality is not rebuilt. An internal business application takes weeks instead of months
- Cost: MIT license, no license fees per project or per user
- Team: One backend team delivers the complete application, without a separate JavaScript frontend
- Future-proofing: TALL stack (Tailwind CSS, Alpine.js, Livewire, Laravel), a large community and documentation as extensive as that of Laravel itself
The bottom line: Filament is the right choice when you want to replace spreadsheets, isolated tools or an outdated backend with a clean, extensible application. Our experience with Laravel and Livewire forms the foundation.
What license and operating costs does Filament involve?
Filament itself costs nothing. The framework is MIT licensed and may be used commercially without fees, regardless of the number of projects or users.
What is free
- The core: Panels, resources, tables, forms, widgets, actions, multi-tenancy
- Most plugins: A large part of the ecosystem is open source as well
- Updates: All releases, including major versions
Where costs arise
- Development: Concept, implementation of your business logic, integrations and tests. This is the main item
- Hosting: A Filament application is a Laravel application and runs on any PHP-capable server or in the cloud
- Individual commercial plugins: Paid extensions exist for special cases, usually as a one-time payment
- Maintenance: Security updates, upgrades and further development after launch
The comparison
- Laravel Nova: License per project, on top of development
- Low-code platforms: Recurring fees per user per month that grow with the team
- Filament: One-time development costs, afterwards only operations and maintenance
The bottom line: Calculated over three to five years, Filament is usually the most cost-effective option for internal applications with more than a handful of users. We work out a reliable cost estimate in the concept workshop.
Why should I hire a Filament agency?
The first CRUD views take minutes in Filament. The difference between a prototype and an application that survives five years in production lies in decisions that require experience.
Where experience makes the difference
- Livewire lifecycle: Without understanding requests, state and hydration, you end up with sluggish forms and hard-to-reproduce bugs
- Authorization: Policies, panel access, tenant separation and field visibility have to work together. One gap is enough to show data to the wrong users
- Performance of large tables: Eager loading, indexes, filter logic, deferred loading and queued exports decide whether a list with 500,000 rows stays usable
- Architecture decisions: When a resource is enough, and when a custom page, a widget or a dedicated Livewire component is the better fit
- Upgradeability: Overriding core classes instead of extending them comes at a price with the next major release
What we bring on top
- Quality assurance: Automated tests, static analysis and CI/CD are part of every project
- Operations: Monitoring, maintenance and planned upgrades after launch
- Honest advice: If Filament is not the right fit, for example for highly individual frontends, we say so before the first sprint
The bottom line: You get an application that stays maintainable even as requirements grow and your team changes. Learn more about our approach to web application development and our project support for existing teams.
